This is not a ranked list. I did not run twelve masks through a particle chamber. The decision is operational: a disposable N95 that seals on your face for the dust-out, post-construction, or sanding house — and a par small enough that it does not live in the caddy every Tuesday.
A crumpled mask in the cup holder is trash. That is not a buy. An empty sleeve when next week’s book has a remodel is a buy. Do not walk out with a cartridge respirator because one Saturday was dusty.
What to look for
Name the type. Ignore the color of the shell in the listing photo.
1. Disposable N95 (the default for remodel dust)
This is the restock. Look for N95 on the listing, disposable, and a count you will actually finish — a 10-pack or 20-pack, not a contractor case. Drywall dust, sanding dust, and the first clean after a remodel are particulate jobs. One person who hits those houses a few times a month does not need a 200-count. A 10-pack in the closet is par.
2. A nose clip and two straps that still hold
If it will not pinch to your nose, it is a chin hammock. Dual-strap cup or folded N95 is the usual shape. Replace the pack when straps snap or the foam is gone — not when the box still looks full of crushed extras. Fit is your face, not a review count.
3. Individually wrapped, or a sleeve you can reseal
Caddy dust will coat an open brick of masks. Wrapped singles, or a zip bag around the remaining stack, is how they stay usable. An opened 20-count dumped in the tote is how you wear last month’s lint.
4. One size you already wear — plus one spare in the car
Buy the size that seals on you. If you work a two-person pair, that is a second marked sleeve, not a mixed pile. One extra in the glove box is emergency only: the house that turned out to be a sanding day. If the car pack becomes the weekly buy, you are shopping wrong on purpose.
5. Keep it off the weekly burn list
Gloves and bags are weekly. Dust masks are a remodel line. Put “N95 disposable, par 10, for dust-out / post-construction” on the supply tab. Overwrite that number if your book is all new-builds this quarter. Do not raise par forever because one Saturday was a gut job.

What to skip
- Cloth fashion masks and one-strap “dust” cones from the hardware end-cap. They are not an N95, and they will not stay put for a sanding clean.
- A 200-count warehouse brick “because the unit price.” You will crush them, age them, and still buy another sleeve next year.
- Cartridge respirators and organic-vapor filters for a residential wipe-down. That is a different job and a different Sunday. This page is disposable N95 for particulate dust.
- Opened, damp, or makeup-stained masks reused from last month. Disposable means you throw it. Count sealed remaining, not crumpled leftovers.
- Buying a new chemical because the house was dusty. Dust is a mask-and-time problem. It is not a reason to change the mix.
- Wearing nothing on a drywall dust-out because “it’s just a house.” The restock exists so you do not make that call in the driveway.
Sunday-cap note
Dust masks are not a weekly burn. Count sealed N95s still in the sleeve — not how many crumpled cones are in the cup holder. If you still have a handful and next week’s book is ordinary recurring, skip the aisle and spend the cap on gloves, bags, or floor cleaner.
The Recurring Clean Book supply tab can hold “N95 disposable, par 10, dust-out / remodel only.” Raise it for a known construction week, then put par back. Do not change the number forever because of one Saturday.
